This problem could have been avoided by simply thinking about the intention behind the post and if it would offend anyone.

I think a simple apology is the only thing you can do in these situations and clarify that it was not the intention of the post.
What else could the person have done differently?
Harry, in this case, could have done something differently by apologizing or using his platform to help stop these situations by learning from his mistake.
What would you do if you or a friend found yourselves in that position?
If me or my friend was in this position, I believe I would apologize immediately and explain my intentions. I would also try to create awareness from my mistake and remind people to think about what they post before doing it. If my friend did this, I would quickly and calmly inform them of the situation and help them solve the issue.

ReplyDeleteWhile Harry’s posts may have not intended offense, there is a very fine line when it comes to cultural APPRECIATION versus APPROPRIATION. Historically, Native Americans have had virtually everything taken from them. By wearing a headdress designed in their traditional style, it diminishes the cultural and spiritual significance of the piece. Harry Styles may not have meant it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t harmful to others. I admit there should be some benefit of the doubt, however, naivety is a poor excuse to be making for anyone, much less a famous person with a large public reach.
Hi Gina, I applaud your definition of 'social media etiquette.' It was very well written. Harry may have been astounded by the headdress, but with his fan base, he should have just been a little more private. People are very open to taking offense and be blunt about it. Great job!
